If you know people like that, then it's a kind hearted person that wants to help. If you can, fine, but be careful about the company you keep. Sometimes they get more help than you thought you could give. Charity begins at home.Know when to draw the line. You cant help others if you cant help yourself. I can think of a lot of other cliches to say, but I guess what I really mean is make sure your not kicking a dead horse. You come first, its called survival

Get away from them. They will bring you down by worrying and spending too much of your time and effort on their problems. Take care of yourself first. It is hard, but if they do not want to straigten themselves out, then they will see you as a sucker and a way to help them advance their addictions. If they do decide to get help have them prove it first by making them take the first initiative, i.e. telling their dealers and bookies to leave them alone. Do not go into it thinking that you could be a hero because these people do not want heroes, they want money and anything that can satify their addictions.

You cannot help anyone who is an addict unless let want help. All you will end up doing is butting your head against wall that will not budge. When the person is ready you can get them into whatever program they need to help with their addiction. Until then all you can do is wait for them to hit bottom. It make take a while but it will happen.

You pray. You pray everyday for them.

People are stubborn and will have to hit rock bottom or die before coming to realization they have a dependancy on anything in life.

Right now, my addiction is the Internet. But I know I am addicted to it and am sure I can walk away from it. Also, this is not, I am sure, an addiction that can kill me per se.

The best way to help them is to help them help themselves. strong support to get them to stop. They want to have to do it, otherwise they will always find themselves at the bottom of a bottle. make them realise you are trying to help and the world does not hate them.
