'Person A walks to school at 3 miles/hr and jogs back at 5 miles/hr. His total traveling time is 1 hour. What was the total distance he traveled round trip?'

wha.....why would it be eight? 3 mile/hour and 5 mile/hour are speeds...

My friend asked me this, so I don't know if there's a specific method to be used...
or maybe this is just a bogus question...

'myothernewname', since on the way back he travelled at a faster speed, wouldn't the time be shorter as well? So it would not be split perfectly into 30 min for both trips...

let x be the distance of the one-way trip.

So, the time it takes person a to walk to school is x/3 hr
and the time jogging back is x/5 hr

x/3 + x/5 = 1
5x/15 + 3x/15 = 1
8x/15 = 1
x=15/8

So, the total distance of the round trip is 2 * 15/8 miles = 3.75 miles

I am sure 8 miles are not the correct answer. Let's think of it this way, person A spent some times walking at 3 miles/hr and some times walking at 5 miles/hr, and the total time he spent is 1 hour. How can he walk 8 miles in 1 hour?!?

First let us convert the hours to minutes throughout......

Walking speed of the A = 3 miles/60 min = 0.05 miiles per min
Jogging speed of A = 5 miles/60 = 0.083 miles per min

Let us take the distance from A's home to school as "x"
The distance both ways (i.e. round trip) will be "2x"

Taking the formula distance = time * speed we get

2x = 60 min ( 0.05 + 0.083m)
or 2 x = 7.99 or say 8 (rounded)
Hence the total distance of the round trip he travelled will be 8 miles.

I think it is 8 miles. While 3miles per hour and five mile per hour are sppeds they are still telling you how much a person could have walked had he/she walked an hour. In this instance the total time walked is one hour.

let the distance from home to school be x
Time taken to go to school = D/S = x/3 ........(1)
Time taken to come back = D/S = x/5 ........(2)

Adding equation (1) & (2), we get....

Total time taken = x/3 + x/5 = 1 hr
=> (5x + 3x)/15 = 1
8x = 1 * 15
x = 15/8
thus total distance = 2* 15/8 = 2 * 1.875 = 3.75 kms.

4 Miles.
3mph for 30 min is 1.5 miles
A---------------------B
5mph for 30 min is 2.5 miles

1.5 + 2.5 = 4

it is 3.75 miles, trust me, I know what I'm saying but don't feel like typing the proof out.
