Try a project which monitors LAN,provides facility for remote shutdown, remote desktop capture, improving the network transmission, optimizing the band width etc.,try to automate any of the 2 modules, you can do it in the specified time.Take the title as
Network Monitor.

Develop a caching proxy HTTP server in JAVA, A download manager in java. I'm doing the first at present on my own, only to hone my skills. Would u join me? A company always make the going a little easier. Still better if u can gather 2/3 more persons.

you ccan amke a chatting program and can check in ur lab having 3 or 4 computer. 2 module will be develop one for server and one for client . server part of ur prog. obviously on the server computer and a copy of client prog will be in all other. .using gui in java u can make it look fantastic and can be made in 25 to 30 days with fantastic feature. for further enquiry u can ask me on umesh936@gmail.com
