They just buy a team instead of making one themselves. Have you noticed they are rich? That is the only reason why they are good. People like to root for a self-made team like the Marlins rather than a money-made team like the Yankees.

I think folks in general have a thing against:
(1) Success
(2) New York, and
(3) money (at least, if it's not in THEIR grasp).
Unless you've experienced success, you're always going to have a victim mentality, and assume successful people (and teams) achieved success by unfair means. Which is generally untrue.
As for the money -- yes, the Yankees have the highest payroll in baseball. But the Red Sox, Phillies, Mets and Dodgers have incredibly large payrolls, and haven't been nearly as successful as NY.
Oh yes -- there's the Steinbrenner factor. He has softened from his "boss" image, (and if you're a Yankee fan, you have no problem with someone who's passionate about winning). But folks who have a problem with money and authority can put a "face" on their dislike of the Yankees via Steinbrenner.
Maybe the final reason, and this is a narrow one, is the fans who like new faces and teams in the playoffs. But honestly, whenever a poll is taken, like, "What series will you not be following in the post-season", it's generally teams without the tradition, recognition and superstars you'll find on a marquee club like the Yankees.
I will say this much for you. While you've admitted not being a Yankee fan, you're at least open minded with your inquiry. We need more individuals like you -- it's the mark of a true seeker.

As much as I hate the Yankees, they are a necessary evil to baseball.
Yankees have probably the worst owner in baseball, or professional sports, in terms of attitude, ever. They have by far the highest payroll of any team any given year, and still blow chances to win despite having an all star team. They influence their fans to be rude and ignorant. A lot of good players who have played for the Yankees have their careers turn upside down, and if a no name starter from the beginning of the season starts to struggle, they rid him and trade for a well named player from another team and screw both the other team and themselves over. The list can go on and on, but hey, a necessary evil, baseball won't be baseball without the Yankees.

When you win as much as the Yankees have. and have stomped on the championship dreams of teams from other city's I can see why they are hated. The Yankees generate more money than any other baseball team. Some of that money is divided up among the other teams via revenue sharing. I respect George Steinbrenner as an owner because he spends all that cash the Yankees make on the team. Instead of putting it in his pocket. Forbes magazine has a list of the 400 richest Americans this year they are all billionaires. George Steinbrenner is not on the list, Mike Ilitch owner of the Tigers and the Red Wings is and Kansas City's team is owned by one of the Waltons who own Walmart. Here in Detroit I am really happy for Mike Ilitch whose success with the Wings was done buy out spending the rest of the NHL to bring the Stanley Cup to Detroit. Now he is finally having success with the baseball team.
Go Tigers!

I don't think everyone HATES the Yankees....
We went through the same thing here in Detroit with the Red Wings for a few Years.
Small market cities or teams that are run by people that won't or can't spend money on talent, tend to hate the teams who "buy" championships.
It's great when your team spends money on the big guns and they deliver...for the other teams, they have an uphill battle.
It isn't easy being the so-called "topdogs" though....other teams are always gunnin' for you and they are gonna do there best to take you down.

I think it's part jealousy and the fact that there is an unfair advantage because of money. More money buys better players and better players win. Another reason might be the fan base. Yankee fans tend to be less classy...not all of course..but the ones I have known and seen at the games come across that way.

The players in the Yankees, get too much $$$$$$$. I bet if u add all the money that the Yankees get, it will be more than every team in the MLB. Yankees get too much $$$ and they don't play better than some other teams.
:( i feel sad because i am a Yankees fan born in New York.

Yes they are hated because they have the most money and have an all star team every year. Its unfair to teams like florida when the yankees payrool per year is 250 million. This year the marlins payroll was 17 million. I guess it comes down to they market but everyone is saick of that. And it also helps that gay-rod i mean a-rod is a fag with jeter jeter gay-rods peter beater.

Jealous, Jealous, Jealous......Some of the Yankees haters are just jealous of Yankee's achievements. They wish their teams can be as good as Yankee's.
