if your scared of someone else making it fail then just drive it the way it is until it does fail.

Do a pan gasket filter change service. Don't over tighten the pan bolts and put a bottle of either Lucas transmission treatment in with the correct amount of transmission fluid or the product the gentleman above suggested. I've seen Lucas make a transmission last another 25,000 miles that Everyone said wouldn't go another inch without replacing the whole transmission. Only use one quart of Lucas though. It's pretty thick stuff.

What you may be experiencing between 2ND and 3rd is the wear in the transmission clutches, slightly,to cause you some discomfort just before engaging properly, regular maintenance is key to long life in your vehicle and you cannot do more damage to it by properly servicing it ,transmission fluids just like engine oil loses it hydraulic properties and can be filled with residue that can give more trouble to your( valve body,)what helps the tranny shifts,so do the fluid change and you can monitor what is inside by taking off the pan to the tranny,if you see metal chunks along with brass pieces brace yourself for another tranny,if it just have a regular black lead based coating in the bottom of the pan,you are in hog heaven, keep that car running proper maintenance is the key.

Jake, you have all the knowledge already; there isn't much I can recommend that you already not know. My suggestion, like they say don't mess with a good thing. If you fell that you want to do something just to be safe, but without draining the old oil, my suggestion is to just add half a bottle of TransX to the trani. Don't drain anything, don't flush anything. TransX comes in a silver bottle and can be found at Auto Zone. Yes my suggestion will result in slightly over fill the tani by a little bit. It should not be a problem. Try it, it worked for me...

my truck did that too. i changed out the fluid and the gasket. it doesnt do it any more, plus it made it a little quieter. new fluid wont make it slip. when you change it, if you do it urself, check ur magnet in the pan for metal shavings. a little is normal, but if there is a good amount, have it checked out.

I'd drive it until, normally, until it reached a point where there's no choice but to either fix if or replace it.
Which ever you decide to do, you'll just have to consider is it worth rebuilding or simply replacing.
