The way Scientists take the age of living trees is by taking a core sample. This is a small diameter cutting tube, about 1/4". It must be at least able to reach the center of the tree in length. the bigger the diameter of the tree the longer the core tube. The Corer usually has a "T" handle for turning it while taking a sample. By gently pushing and at the same time turning the core tube it moves through the tree leaving a core of the tree inside the corer. After the center of the tree is reached, the core tube is extracted with the core sample inside. You must be gentle when removing the core sample from the tube. then using a magnifying lens you can count the tree rings along the sample to determine the age of the tree.

They drill a hole horizontally through the trunk and take a core sample. The core that comes out looks like a "bar code". alternate light and dark bands. The dark bands are the tree rings, they count those.
You can actually get a good estimate as to the age of a tree by taking a measurement around the girth of the trunk.
