Lots and lots of people were working on the idea. Patents were many and there was a lot of contention over who created what. Many were working in steam engines. But the internal combustion engine was more practicle for smaller vehicles. But success implies not only technical achievement, but also marketability. One of the European pioneers was Daimler (whose company eventually, in the 1920s, started making the Mercedes Benz; Mercedes was the name of one of the engineers daughters). One of the American Pioneers was Olds.
Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler (17 March 1834–6 March 1900) was an engineer, industrial designer and industrialist, born in Schorndorf in what is now Germany. He was a pioneer of internal-combustion engines and automobile development.
Daimler and his lifelong partner Wilhelm Maybach were two workaholic inventors whose dream was to create small, high speed engines to be mounted in any kind of locomotion device. They patented in 1885 a precursor of the modern petrol engine which they subsequently fitted to a two-wheeler, considered the first motorcycle and, in the next year, to a stagecoach, and a boat.
Ransom Eli Olds (June 3, 1864–August 26, 1950) was a pioneer of the American automobile industry, for whom both the Oldsmobile and Reo brands were named. He claimed to have built his first steam car as early as 1894, and his first gasoline powered car in 1896.
Although in terms of making automobiles available to the general public, the prize has to go to Henry Ford and his model T. Unitl then, the cars were luxury items and status symbols. In terms of sales and accessability, the Model T could well be considered the first successful car.

Benz created the first car in mid 1885, but could not get it into serious production, it was only when he collaborated with Dailmer that the first commercial Dailmer-Benz automobile was launched.
The first real commercial success was Henry Ford's Model-T
which went into production in 1903 and was on sale till 1929
and was used in various forms other than a personal car, like police vehicle, commercial carrier , etc...
