"The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun" is a 1984 song by Julie Brown recounting a high school shooting. A parody on 1950s "tragedy" songs, it revolves around a teenage homecoming queen named Debbie who pulls out a gun after being crowned and shoots the people in her class. In the end she is shot by police, and confesses before she dies that she murdered her classmates for a mysterious person named "Johnny", who may or may not have been a nerdy classmate of Debbie's that had braces (or a character from the book The Outsiders). She compares the unrevealed identity of "Johnny" to "Rosebud" in Citizen Kane.
The first time I saw it I was slightly disturbed, not realaly sure what I thought of it. BUT now, I think it's HILARIOUS! I saw it, it;s funny!

In the 80s it was funny - it was a joke - most of us teens in the 80s at that time would never have ever dreamed a school shooting was a real possibility. If that song came out now - people would be fighting to ban it! I think that there are some really pathetic parents out there who do not know how to instill morals and values into their children and or abuse them. These poor kids end up getting picked on in school for what their parents failed to give them (self respect, self esteem, concern for others - love). They end up getting involved in all kinds of wacky things with no caring discipline in place to stop them. So, yes the song was really funny - at that time. Being an outcast in the 80s meant you might have a mean thought about what to do to those snot nosed cheerleaders - now - there is less fear and people are taking action. So the song Now - NO NOT FUNNY - not one little bit!

I remember the song. I loved it back then, and in all reality can still sing parts of it. But its true, there is no way this song could be even played on oldies type radio now. Too much has happened with school shootings. But at the time, we would have never thought about doing that. As for Johnny... after i grew up I kind of thought the line was to mimick The Outsiders, after Johnny Cade dies, and Dally gets mad and says :Lets do it for Johnny!" The song came out about a year after the movie. maybe two,

It really was funny back then, but unfortunately now we can't laugh about stuff like that. It was a horrible/great song though. Everyone could sing it, and I'll bet if it were on the radio today we could all sing it again!
