I have to do a verbal and reasoning test next week. What are the best ways to prepare (except the obvious like get a good nights sleep)? Are there any resources that I can check out to get feel for the test? Thank you.

I am a finance student, and i have the hardest ones in the country to do. this is how to tackle them. On excel bang out 100 random numbers side -buy side. practice mental arthmatic like you are in preschool again. refrain from using the calulator. things like 24 time 4 should be done in your head, using basics like... 20 times 4 then ad 4 times 4 i,e. 80 plus 16. all this will give you the confidence to tackle numericy tests. do this with adding and minus and divide. another thing you CANNOT practice with these tests, they are designed so that even if you had practice you wouldnt improve your score by much. another thig timeing! you MUST MUST MUST get timeing to a millsecond if you stand a chance. i have usually 20 minutes 35-40 questions. this means if i answer all of them i would be 30 seconds a pop. Phychologically your mind plays tricks with time. say you look at a question go blank- read reread and panick it will seem like minutes have passed. actaully it might have only been 10 seconds. practice (literally) waiting for and absorbing the question for exactly 70% of your Per question time. i.e min a question then devote 42 seconds thinking. the actaul calculateion will take you 3-5 secods- trust me. if you dont believe me simple test. do six back to back calculatiosn on your calculators i.e 3 x 4 minus 56 plus 24767846 time 57..93 % etc.

numericy tests are tricker becasue they fool you on time even more. they usuualy give 4-5 questiosn per caption. take your time readig each caption so for the first question it might take 1 minute, but the next three will take 5-7 secs each. literally practice saying things backwards i.e. that is not true correct? so you are disentangling the question are they asking yes its correct or no its not correct so yes its correct the statment!!! SOrry if its confusing but there is no other way.

Good luck.

Hi.
The basic principles for aptitude testing are that the candidate(you) should not have seen or completed the test before. The aim is to test your baseline ability. I am industrial psychologist and I have seen people really work hard to prepare for such basic and usually simple tests. Some, because there preparation has been so intensive, actually panic in the test session and do extremely poorly. If you have completed high-school and gained average grades relax.... The tests will be "no sweat" for you. If its for a job, and chartered Psychologist is monitoring the administration you will be treated fairly and respectfully. The best preparation is therefore to have a good nights sleep and to enjoy the tests. The best preparation is from the mistakes I have seen candidates make is no preparation. If you want more information on the rules regarding testing have a look at this site:

Wow... its been 20 years since I went to school and now after having a family I have to face numeracy tests, to go back to my previous employment. Its not that I can not do - it is that I am too slow... less than 5 days to prep.... the last test gave me 18secs a question.
