My mother and I have been having an on going debate because she leaves the TV on 24/7. She claims it is cheaper to do that because every time you turn it on or off it costs an extra nickle. And it also saves wear and tear on the on/off button. I say it is cheaper to turn it off when no one is watching it or when no one is home because it saves on electricity. Who is right and can you provide info or a link to a website that can prove who is right?

Btw, her TV looks to be about 25 years old and has 19 inch screen.

Her latest excuse now is that she leaves it on 24/7 for security.

The department of energy says to turn off appliances when not in use.

Still not convinced? Conduct an experiment where she can watch what happens at the meter when the TV is turned off or on. See if there is a sudden surge of energy at the meter or a subtle change.

Turning it off for the time she is sleeping is saving her money.
A lot more than a few nickels..............we're talking at least 6=8 hours here................And besides, the longer she leaves it on, the faster every thing, tubes, screen etc, will run down or burn out, costing her more in the long run because she will have to go out a get a new TV !!!!

Try asking your mom to go outsude and look at the electric meter and see if it turns slower or fast with the television off or on. My dad and mom used to debate about this also and one day he showed her the difference and it actually worked! Good luck!!

That's the oddest argument I've ever heard of, lol. Turning it off saves energy naturally. I don't know of any websites offhand that proves this, I just assumed this was common sense!

ohkay,.i think u oughtta have two TV's and so u can prove ur point by not turning it on at ALL and the other one will be operated by ur mom, and she'll turn it on 4ever or somethin....then compare ur electricity bills.
But, obviously, turning off the TV is a better way to conserve electricity....

Turn if off. Here's another tip. If you are leaving the house for awhile, also unplug it. TV's, especially old ones, have been known to cause fires.

That's the BEST argument I've heard of!
Sounds like my family...
I'd say turn it off. It's better for everyone.
