We never learn from the mistakes of the past. A good example of this right now would be the problems in Iraq. The situation is so similar to the problems in Vietnam. I guess George W. didn't the memo about Vietnam. He has made the same mistakes as Johnson did and right now it is one big quagmire, where there is no exit strategy.

The troops for now have a high moral, but are now questioning the war, just like Vietnam They do not know who the enemy is anymore, just like Vietnam. Some soldiers are now going AWOL more and more, just like Vietnam. We are backing a government that is shaky and whose own police and military is part of the problem, just like Vietnam.

I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

Hegel is right. We don't always learn from history...because we are too great of fools to believe there is anything to learn. People say we repeat history, but we don't really see that we do because we take our progress and technology and say we are different.

We can't see "them" as "us" . Do you think immigration is a new concern? Do you not see a similarity between us and Rome? Yet here we are all invading and fighting about who we let in. Nothing changes admidst the change.

Hegel said that? Cool!

I think what he meant is that viewing the wake of our boat never reliably informs us about our course in the water.

well religions have been fighting for 1000's of years, nations have been fighting for just as long. We do repeat history all the time. Rwanda happened and the world sat by and watched, Darfur is happening and the world is sitting by and watching..its what we as a species do.

If you're smart enough to understand Hegel you don't need to ask.

think of your life as history.
everything you learn as you grow through life helps you to make informed decisions. every mistake you make helps you to not make the same ones in the future.
history is your life multiplied many times over.
to quote santayana, "if you do not learn the lessons of history you are condemned to repeat them."

it is -that we never learn it
we do the same things over and over again
no matter how much information we have -we still do things with emotion and passion and as a species never change
sure we are more advanced technically
but we still rape and pillage just like cave dwellers did
