This should clear it up

Indians - India

American Indians, or Native Americans - North America

The reason why we call Native Americans "Indians" is only because Christopher Columbus was trying to find a new route to India, to prove that the Earth is round. So when he landed here he called the people Indians.

To Oracle - and I would like to point out that Canada is still North AMERICA

It would be interested to the readers that the Caribbean is also known as the WEST INDIES and we are called WEST INDIANS eventhough the present day inhabitants are majority Black, White and other races.

Seems like Christopher Columbus made a number of errors in his travels and labelled everyone Indian as he saw them though his eyes. When he got to the Caribbean he saw a people group and label the place the Indies because he thought he had reached Asia. Eventually when he realised his error the archipelago was renamed the Caribbean becuase of the people group alive at the time the Caribs.

Mr. Columbus has named nearly every terriority India thus its peoples Indian until he reached the real India in the East.

However when I hear Indian I think of India.

Since Indian can mean someone who lives or comes from India aswell as a native American usually I will state Native American or Inian -coming from India. do wish to point out that America and Canada are 2 separate countries and the first people of Canada are native Indians but not living in America but around as in Canada

technically Indian refers to the denizens of the country of India....the reason Native Americans are commonly referred to as Indians is that Columbus, in his attempt to find a short cut to India, thought he had indeed found India, therefore dubbing the locals Indians...

Out of respect, when I say Indian I specify whether I'm speaking of Middle Eastern Indians or American Indians. As you know they are quite different and people should ackowledge that and address them accordingly.

well being an american native. it is pollitically incorrect to call us indians. christopher columbus thaught he was in india when he came to america and he called us indians and ever since then it stuck but we are trying to get that through to white people that we are not indians but natives to our own land.
