So im watching these sex predators on dateline NBC and its crazy as to why these older men in their 30's would actually go to a teenage girls house expecting to have sex. Many of these men have careers and families.

Well, with this show in mind and all that stuff...i couldnt help but wonder on a situation with my friend and i. See, i turned 18, im a guy, i turned 18 in May and today is my other buddies bday, turning 18 as well. Both of us are male freshman in college in California. I dont have a girlfriend but if i was to have a girlfriend at the age of 17, would it still be considered illegal? Even if we were only months apart? Secondly, my friend that is 18 has a girlfriend that just turned 17 or still is 16 years old. (Yes, i think shes rather young for him but they seem to like each other). So even if they're together is it still illegal? It was just a thought in my mind that i wanted answered. None of this is all that online predators the dateline show is about. So answers? :-)

Under 18 is illegal. According to the law. It would mainly be the discretion of the prosecutor, judge and jury.
But it is interesting 1 14 yo girl can have the mental awareness to request an abortion without parental
consent. Yet supposedly incapable to decide if they are old enough to be sexually active with whom they wish.
It's also intriguing a 14 yo can be charged with a crime as an adult.....yet cannot have sex with an adult because they are not old enough to understand. Amazing.
The laws are so mixed up something needs to be done about age of consent. Either they are or not mentally old enough to do what they want.

It depend on the Age Of Consent. In some states that can as young as 16 yrs old. In some States two 14 year old kids having sex is illegal and both will get in trouble. Now your 18 year old friend may be safe as long as he doesn't film the sex act.
That's a whole new can of worms. Any person having sex on film must be at least 18 years old.

If a girlfriend is 17 or under, consensual sex is illegal and you can be BUSTED. Check stories in Wisconsin and other places where 18 year old kids are going to jail or horrible sex offender classes with a bunch of friggin weirdos. Ewww! In Florida, even if you are MARRIED to someone 17 or under, you're going to be prosecuted. Fuggitaboutit. You should be studying and playing sports anyway.

Teens are exposed to way too much because of the Republican shenanigans. Young and sexy has been commercialized by old people and young people are over exposed and swear they must do something. Remember the stupid mistakes of the adults nowadays and vow not to repeat them. Those fogies don't have any sense. Tell Dateline to set up a house in a Republican Stronghold town so those nasty bums can finally be thrown in jail.

In California, where I live so thats why I know this If the girl is 16 or seventeen, and the boy is 18 it's technically okay. As long as the age difference is three years or less there is a legal grey area that makes allowances if the relaitionship existed prior to the boy turning 18. (or vice versa with the genders reversed)

Even under 18 the three year difference applies, unless one of them is under, I thknk it is 11 or 12, then its illegal period. Even if they are both 10 its illegal. Weird but true.

I'm not sure about where you are at, but in North Carolina, as long as you are within 3 years of the same age you are safe. Of course once you are both over 18 it doesn't matter about the age difference.

The law isn't fuzzy - a few days or minutes before your 18th birthday means you are still legally 17.

However, whether either of you have committed statutory rape depends on the state you are in. The age of consent is not fixed by federal law, but by state law.

dateline is just filling up air time. The people at NBC lack the ability to crate an informative program so they put the same old stuff on for what seems like eternity. Why people are so dumb and watch that stuff is beyond me. Instead of watching that junk I use my time finding historic events to watch or positive items. Naturally I enjoy stories like Boston Legal or the new show Shark but they are falling victim to commercial time taking over the shows. Thanks god for PBS and TCM.

Check your state laws.
Kids younger than 18 shouldn't be having sex
Usually cops and judges lighten the sentences if the ages are close and there is no history of abuse. (But don't bet on it).

Wait until you are ready to share the responsibility's of sex before you have sex.

If she's under 18, depending on your state, it could mean major jail time. You are too young to be having sex anyway. Do you want to be a daddy before you're 20?
