You can buy dye packs at most grocery stores, if you can't find them there go to a fabric or craft store, but make sure you get a dye made especially for fabric. Cotton (which is the majority of the fiber content in most jeans) dyes pretty well, so as long as you follow the instructions that come with the dye you should do well. One little tip though, dye is fairly toxic, so if you can, do your dying in a washing machine, or outside, wear gloves, and try not to inhale any fumes (the dust, or the steam).

And just a correction to the post above me, most of the tips are VERY good, but I wouldn't reccomend washing them cold from that point on, cold water helps to take out stains, and dyes, so will make them fade faster. Hot water sets stains and colors, but may damage the fabric, so I would suggest washing them in just regular warm water.

Best way - washing machine and RIT dye. The darker the jeans are, the less dye they will "take" - if they are good and faded, you will get better colour.

Use Hot water for the wash cycle, and set it to soak for at least 20 minutes ( depending on the machine, you may have to raise the lid to let this happen.) Dump two packets of RIT in the hot water before you add the jeans (NO SOAP!). Let it agitate them and then stop the machine and let them sit.

Then let them go through the regular rinse/spin cycle on COLD, and HANG them to dry. PUT AN OLD TOWEL under where you hang them as they will drip dye.

If you wear them now, you will dye your legs! Once they are really dry, run them through the wash again with COLD only and no soap. This will also help to get the dye out of the washing machine. In fact, you may have to run the machine for several cyles before the water runs clear. This time, dry them in the dryer on warm.

You may still get a little tint on your legs the first few times you wear them but it will come off in the shower. Also, if they are stretch jeans, it will not take nearly as well as it will on pure denim. Always wash in COLD, and accept that the colour will fade over time.

Good luck!
