I want something that I can put into my engine. Will a new air filter change anything?

Air filters, when they do get performance gains, usually yield only a horsepower or two. I used a K&N drop in filter on my Focus and didn't notice any improvement in either performance or mileage.

Just what to do will depend on how much horsepower you want and how much you can afford. Some options:

Cold air intake + headers + exhaust: Likely to get a small but noticable power gain, maybe 10%, but cheap parts may not actually improve things at all. And it'll definitely cost you some of that Lexus quietness.

Nitrous oxide injection: You could probably add 75 hp safely at the touch of a button for a reasonable ($600 or so) price. But it's only there part time.

V8 swap: Drop in a 4.3 V8 from one of the larger Lexuses and you'll have significantly more power with factory reliability. This is going to be a lot of work.

Twin turbos: Another mod that is a HUGE amount of work for a huge power gain.

Take out all the passenger seats, dashboard cluster, radio, speakers, door panels, door handles, window motors, power steering pump and reservoir, air conditioning compressor and related hardware, windshield wipers, fluid, and wiper motor, headlights and taillights, bumpers, body trim, spare tire, and jack. That will lighten you up giving you more HP to weight, which is really what you need. Get to work.
