I have one...they are so cute! I also got it at the same time as a teddy, which grew quite a bit larger than the dwarf, but never bothered it. the teddy has met an untimely death due to the kiddies leaving the cage open and the kitty found him before we did, but it's ok, I think sammy (the dwarf) misses hammy, but i am sure he is happier without a cage mate. Also...it is true that they tend to bite more often, but it is only in self defense due to their small size. mine is great with my kids, they hold him all the time. and it is ok if you go away, I am sure that someone will be willing to take a small cage into their home for a few days all they may need to do is change his water and food really...this should be enough till you get back.

There is only one kind of Dwarf Hamster that doesn't bite and that is the Roborski Hamster. It is double the price of Teddy Bear Hamsters but very friendly. No matter what any pet store person tells you about the Chinchilla or the Siberian Dwarf, even the home raised ones eventually bite.
Penn-Plax and Super pet both make nice little modules that are complete with wheel, water bottle and food dish for Dwarf Hamsters so that would make it easy to travel with your hamster.
Dwarf Hamsters eat a lot for their size, live as long as regular hamsters and like to be alone. They are not chewers either.

Yes, I like dwarf hamsters because if you would like more than one then they wont fight. They are SUPER easy to take care of and uber cuddly.

NO...get a pet rat. I have had every kind of rodent...even though rats are a little uglier they are easily trained and have more personality then a hamster.

if your looking for something to hold, then don't get one, because they are so jumpy and hard to keep in your hands. I reccommed a black bear hamster, because even though they are a little bit more expensive, they are really nice.
