jazz is one of the oldest styles of dance. you're not literally dancing to jazz music. i don't really know what you're taking classes for (if you're cheerleading or something) but jazz will teach you the basic techniques of dance. try dance.net for pictures or videos.

There are multiple styles of jazz dance. Most of the time you don't dance to jazz music but sometimes you might. A typical basic class starts off with isolations-which is stretching one part of your body at a time. Then you would go into full stretch (touching your toes, splits, etc.) Some schools also include training (push-ups, crunchs, squats) but since your not a competitive dancer the teacher probably won't force you if your against it. Then you do floor work (Leaps and turns). That takes up most of the class. With the rest of time you will learn a combination. This is where the style of the school will show. Some schools infusion their jazz with hip-hop and the combo would be something in the likes of music video choreography. Other schools do Fosse style. You can find info and performances on the web. That is true jazz (similar to Chicago or Cabaret). Look up dance competition websites such as StarPower or DEA. Most of the times they will have performances from the comp. on there. It might be hard at first, but it will come. Don't give up. And if there is something you don't like about that school try others. Some are similar and others are very different. I have been dancing for 13 years and have worked with tons of different teachers, schools, dancers and choreographers. Each one had their own artistic creativity that differed from each other. And ballet is not on your tippy toes that is another style called Pointe. Ballet does include a lot of releves which is on the ball of your foot only. It is difficult yet fun and will get you in shape (if your not already). It builds muscles and self confidence. Hope it helps. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions. Happy dancing!

Jazz is kind of a mix of tap and spirit, sometimes.

And Ballet is not STANDING ON YOUR TIPPY TOES AND SWIRLING! I take that as an insult. You only do that when you are in a 4-6 (age) class! It hurts like hell! And is hard work too!

I am professionally trained on ballroom dances. Most of the jazz music are not dancable. (at least in ballroom styles) Most of them do not have defined and repeating rythms.

You can stand and sway to the music or do what is generally called "night-club style" steps which is no more than combination of side steps and forward and backward rocking steps. I have seen people invent their own steps and turns, but those are free-style.
