No. Pantera isn't even a very influential metal band. Cowboys from Hell wasn't released until 1990 when the thrash metal scene was becoming less populated and death and black metal were just starting.

Pantera was a pretty bad@ss band, but I don't think that metal was ever in danger or needed to be saved.
