I am making storage boxes for art supplies, kind of like a wooden briefcase size thing. what would a cutting edge subject matter be for this project?

As a carpenter I'd go with a stain or fine wax polish. If the wood is a quality timber then go for a clear polish or varnish.

Well, if you're going for a wooden look, I'd say something that matches it. Personally, I've always liked the glazed look.
