I think it is wonderful you are so honest. I think the biggest mistake most make in life is not being honest with themselves about themselves. It is hard to look at the emotions we are not proud of but only honesty gives us a chance to improve them. Good for you!
Most of the best artists are rarely happy with their own work, that is what keeps them striving for better and takes them to heights and skills beyond most others.
Having at least some satisfaction with your own work is a good thing, perhaps find satisfaction in the fact that you will find your own excellent and original style if you are not there yet, most, I think, never feel they are. It is like climbing mountains or running, there is always something higher or better or a better way to do it so know that art is never something static, it is always a work-in-progress as is the artist, always changing and improving. There are two issues here, technique and emotion….
Technique….I think everyone has their own idea of "realism"...and practice-makes-perfect especially with realism. It takes a lot of patience. Break your painting down, work on one object until you like it. Try some other styles too....sometimes painting impressionist or expressionist can sharpen your skills for realism, it makes you look differently at the subject and feel differently about the materials.
Emotion…Keep working at it and perhaps, set a goal of not finding fault for some time, just work at it and then see how it can be better.....take a deep breath, do this a couple times, look at one thing you don't like in your painting (we always do this first don’t' we?) and one thing you do like....keep doing that and then do it again....after a while you realize it is the process of how we learn to do things better....and study the masters...they painted things over and over and over...and most of them were never quite happy with each work either. Years later you will look back and see the steps you took to get where you wanted to go......I think you will do it....you have the passion and that is important.

I wish i could help, Im an artist too, and I get stuck sometimes but I find that lately ive been inspired by dreams. I seem to have found a wierd type of style too. Like just yesterday I painted a picture of a business man but I made but I made him a pale almost lilac skin tone and I made the stress evident on his face. I dont even know where that came from but it came out so good, I surprised myself. Sometimes I will be at work or out somewhere and ill suddenly think of something I want to paint, and what I do is I write it down somewhere just like I imagined it, and Ill add if I thought about it in any particualr colors or shades and when Im home and ready to paint i just take out my notes. Then it all comes together. All Im saying is even though you may be a little jealous about your brothers new found style, dont try and compete with it, just make sure you are inspired when you paint, thats when they come out good. Good luck

As an artist, you should find things that are you. Don't focus on the things you can't control, like the paintings of your brother. Think hard, when was the last time I was truly inspired?

I started, unconsciously, to work in two idioms at the same time; that is, I work in realism for several days,or whatever, and then start to get bored so i shift over to abstract and work in there for awhile.

Photography, and good photography is ART.
Did you just declare yourself to be an artist, or has a critic called you one, publicly.
I think a lot of lazy people want to be referred to as artists, but have no talent, there. They just keep trying to convince themselves and deny the truth.
