The stamp is printed across the top "district of columbia Bicentennial" and the bottom says "pensylvania avenue, circa 1903". I am sure its an error, because there are 2 stamps, identical, except that one has "USA 29" in the corner, and the other dosnt, so one must be an error. Help please, i would love to know if this is worth anything, or if i should just use it to send a letter.

Post a scan on the message board at http://www.virtualstampclub.com - you will have to register before you can post, but it's free. The people there are very knowledgable and helpful. It's hard to tell from a description (a scan is worth more than 1000 words!), but it might be quite valuable - my stamp catalog lists such an error at $110.

Two cautions - if there is a tiny speck of the engraved black ink anywhere on the stamp, the value is dramatically decreased - if the color is completely missing, that is called an "error," but if there is a little of the color, it's called a "freak" and is worth much less. The complication is that I think that stamp had both engraved black areas and surface-printed black areas, so you need to know what is supposed to be missing - just because there is black ink on the stamp does not necessarily make it not a valuable error. That's where Virtual Stamp Club can help.

The second caution is that catalog values are somewhat inflated, and they are meant to reflect retail prices. If you sell to a dealer, you only get the wholesale price, as dealers have to have a markup to stay in business. So unless you get lucky on eBay, you probably will not be able to sell it for as much as $110.

Good luck! It's a nice find. And I hope it is the error, not the freak!

I think it could be worth quite a sum of money, just bring it to some collector. You should probably get a good sum of money. I mean, one of the quarters was printed with an error and it's worth a lot of money. I'm sure this isn't any different and you'll get a good sum of money back.
