What a bunch of asinine answers so far. Talk about squares. Those people never listened to a Dead concert, guaranteed. Or at least never really "heard" one.

Anyway, to answer your question...
The band was trying to decide on a name. Jerry opened up a huge book (I think it was an encyclopedia) and stopped at a random page and put his finger on a random spot. Under his finger the words "Grateful Dead" were printed.
