I got a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment with a friend. He moved in first and took the master bedroom which has a walk in closet and a 2 room bathroom. The master bedroom is 150 sqf bigger and even bigger if you count the closet/bathroom space .
He thinks we should split the rent and i think he is crazy. He wont pay anymore than half cause he doesnt have the money. So i offered to pay 450 of our 750 rent if I could get the big room. But he wont do it cause he thinks since he lined the apartment up he should get choice of bedrooms.
What is a fair split for rent in a situation like this?
ps. I also am paying our entire cable/internet bill as he said he wouldnt pay for it and not to get it. Although he uses/watches it all the time.

thx for the responses so far. I am trying to find a fair split number though. What would that be? My roomate knows that my parents will pay whatever i ask for so he is holding out. But i try not to abuse my parents money even though they dont care. I just dont want that over me. I want to pay the fair amount for the room or just a little more and feel like what i offered was more then fair.

I would have to say that if your friend cannot pay more for the added square footage or convenience of having a bathroom to himself, he should give up the room. His "bonus" for finding the apartment could be him enjoying the cable without paying for it.
Living with friends is a tricky situation... I don't envy you at all. However, if you two are having difficulty in settling this issue, you can always seek mediation either through a mutual friend you both trust or with a professional mediator. Maybe hearing it from an objective person will help him to see what's reasonable.
Good luck to you...

He sounds like a real winner! I've paid more of the rent before to take the covered parking space; but have never had a situation where we allocated the rent based on square footage. So I guess it would be fair for him to pay 50%; nothing more; nothing less.
HOWEVER, since you are offering to pay a premium to take the bigger room, he is an idiot for not taking the deal.
I would be careful with this one ... he seems to be very tight with his money and it seems he wants the best of everything while someone else pays for it.

A fair split would be 50-50 on expenses, across the board.
Since you can't both have the master bedroom, you need to come to an amicable agreement on that. Say, the one who has the larger bedroom does more chores or something along those lines.
If you two can't get along without petty grudges, you need to look for another place.

You should switch bedrooms halfway through, if he doesn't agree though there is not much you can do if you both are on the lease, you should have gone over all of it before you moved in. Renting an apartment together is often the end of a good friendship, sorry, hopefully you will work things out.

i do no longer think of it quite is uncomplicated to make diverse splits for a minor difference. If that's what you prefer to do, upload up the sq. ft of all 3 bedrooms, and divide the lease by the proportion that each and every mattress room represents. occasion, lease is $one thousand. BR a million is one hundred squareft BR 2 is a hundred and fifty squareft BR 3 is one hundred squareft entire squareft, 450. BR 2 is 40 3% of entire BR squareft, so as that they had pay $430. different 2 could chop up something, $570 or $280 each and every.
