A good way to find out if you are actually leaking oil or transmission fluid is to get a newspaper, newsprint, or other white paper and place it under the truck where the leak is occurring...if it is red or reddish, it is generally transmission fluid...black...motor oil.

By the way, it is a good idea to pull your dipsticks for both your motor oil and transmission fluid every day to check the amount of fluid if you suspect you are leaking either motor oil or transmission fluid. Read your owner's manual for the proper procedures on exactly how to do these tasks, particularly if you have an automatic transmission.

OK, what year is your truck?
What trans, stick or auto?

Newer transmissions, stick or auto both use a red fluid. It is a lighter weight oil. It has pleasent smell.

Engine oil is thicker than the red trans oil and is brown not red.

Older trucks with a stick will have a foul smelling oil. (Gear oil.) Brown in color.

I hope this helps you.

In the future, state make model and year of vehicle.Stick or auto trans. It makes diagnosis easier.

Put a sheet of newspaper under the vehicle overnight. If you get red drips the next morning, it's transmission fluid; if it's brown/black, then you're seeing an oil leak.

red oil indicates trans black/brown indicates motor oil

if it is motor oil check plug and oil pan bolts. sometimes just snugging up oil pan bolts will stop that leak. if it is red oil you probably have a seal to replace when leak gets bad enough.

if the oil is dripping from the oil pan then it could be a worn pan gasket.
