What exactly does sychronize mean?

When I plug my mp3 player into my computer, it says "Sync Manager-ready for sychronization" .. doesn't it mean to stransfer files to my mp3 player? (It says it only wants to sychronize ALL of my pictures.. I'm confuesed.. )

It means to have the same files in both locations... just like updating your address book in a palm pilot with those on your computer for email.
