Oh< by the way, a friend wants either an annulment or a divorce...

It depends on the laws where you live.
A civil annulment may be granted in some cases, especially in marriages of short duration. But usually, a divorce needs to be filed.
If someone is married in the Catholic Church, they can file for an annulment with the church after the civil divorce is final. If your friend was never married in the church, then I don't think this would be an issue. I don't know what rules other Christian churches have in this regard.
So, your friend should seek some legal advice as well as the advice of a priest or minister.

Marriage is a civil contract. Annulment or divorce are legal actions.

Marriage blessed as a sacrament of the church is in the purvey of religion.

Separation of church and state, etc.

annulment is usually for no sex marriages
I was married both times in civil ceremonies...divorce can still happen in NC. Takes forever here though Ugh

yeah, of course. seperation of church and state. The church wedding has nothing really to do with the legal part.
