I was going to ask when and by who the term gay started being used in place homosexual, but I doubt I'll get a serious answer.

The word "gay' is from the OF "gai"="carefree" or "happy". In the 17th century that "carefree" began to be equated with "unrestrained by morality" or "addicted to pleasure", although at that time it still referred to primarily heterosexual activity, so that by the 19th century the term was a common euphemism for "prostitution", or other forms of extra-marital immorality. It was first used to refer to specifically homosexual activity by Gertrude Stein and Noel Coward in the 1920s. It became mainstream in the 1960s when homosexuals adopted it as the term of preference since "queer" was considered offensive, and "homosexuality" was, at the time, considered by the medical community to be a mental illness. It was originally used solely as an adjective (i.e. a gay man) and was so used in the early Gay Rights movement, hence "Gay Rights", "Gay Pride", even "Gay Theater". Sadly, to my thinking, it eventually became a noun instead and Gay people stopped, apparently, being people, and become nothing more than Gays.

What is wrong with this section are that there are many angry people on it...I'm not really sure where gay came from. Homosexual is still the proper term and then probably homosexual men were happier "acting" you know than other manly men and so some boy called them gay and that's how the revolution began. All the details are confusing to me welcome to the club.

there is a lot of gay bashers here, a lot of people who don't have a life and decides to make fun of homosexuality and act like they own us. there is quite a few well respected homosexuals, bisexuals lesbians and heteros here.
