put the #'s in order:
5; 8; 19; 22; 27; 34; 37; 50.
the median will be a number such that 1/2 (4) of the numbers are smaller & 1/2 are bigger. 4 smallest: 5, 8, 19, 22
4 biggest: 27, 34, 37, 50. the median is betwee 22 & 27.
(22+27)/2=24.5 which is the median.

Here are the sample test scores you have seen so often:
100, 100, 99, 98, 92, 91, 91, 90, 88, 87, 87, 85, 85, 85, 80, 79, 76, 72, 67, 66, 45
The "middle" score of this group could easily be seen as 87. Why? Exactly half of the scores lie above 87 and half lie below it. Thus, 87 is in the middle of this set of scores. This score is known as the median.
In this example, there are 21 scores. The eleventh score in the ordered set is the median score (87), because ten scores are on either side of it.
If there were an even number of scores, say 20, the median would fall halfway between the tenth and eleventh scores in the ordered set. We would find it by adding the two scores (the tenth and eleventh scores) together and dividing by two.
arrange it in increasing or decreasing order
50, 37, 34, 27, 22, 19, 8, 5
you have 8 numbers so add the 4th and 5th number and divide it by 2
4th number = 27
5th number = 22
median = 49/2 = 24.5

put them in order:
5, 8, 19, 22, 27, 34, 37, 40
find the middle number: 22 & 27
find the average (mean) of these numbers: 24.5
so your answers are either 24.5 or 22 &27
note: some teacher like it better if you put the two numbers in the middle if you have an even amount of number to find the median of instead of averaging them.
