Mega Pixels are the count (in millions) of pixels (or dots) that make up the image.
When the first "mega pixel" cameras came out they were 1.3 mega pixel. Most people would be satisfied with something around 3 mega pixel, unless you plan on having very large prints (8x10 or larger) made that should be more than enough. Even a 1.3 mega pixel camera can produce decent pictures for 4x6 prints, and is decent for putting photos online.
A few things to consider are that the higher the pixel count, the larger the files will be, so if you're shooting on the best quality at the largest size, you will get fewer pictures than at a reduced quality and/or size -- or with a larger mega pixel count you'll get fewer pictures..
For example, suppose you're shooting with a 1.3 mega pixel camera, and can fit 1000 photos on your memory card, with a 3 mega pixel camera you'll probably only fit around 200, but the image size will be larger and the quality will be better.
For comparison, 12 mega pixels is about equivalent to 35mm film, which can easily be blown up to prints in excess of 20" x 30" without quality loss.

Mega Pixels are how sharp a picture is. So the higher the mega-pixel the clearer the picture will be. The more clearer the picture is, the larger you can print out your picture.
But the clearer the picture the more memory space it'll require, and the more mega pixels the more the camera will cost.
5 megapixels was the standard, but should be way good enough if you're just using it for snapshot purposes.

The more mega pixels you have, the better the quality of any prints you make off the camera. If you want to print up to 8X10, they say 4 MP is enough, but I think 5 or 6 is better. If all you are going to do is send photos as e-mails, 2 MP is plenty. But 4 MP is now available for under $200, so it is worth it to spend that much.

The more the pixels the better and clearer the picture with be.. Also when you have more pixels, you can print larger size photos with clarity, the lower the pixels the fuzzier they are... All when you buy a digital camera check the shutter speed.... Bcs if the shutter speed is very, very slow you will MISS EVERY SINGLE SHOT, When you try to take the picture what ever it's is has happen and your still trying to take the shot.... I know from experience.... Good Luck....

Well yes the higher the mega pixels the better the picture. Let me tell you one brand that I WOULD NOT recommend. I got a HP digital camera for Christmas. It was broken by August. I had only taken about 50 pictures total on it. I contacted HP and they off erred to replace it with another used one for $89.00. I was so disappointed.

Go to a camera store - like Wolfe or Ritz, not Walmart or K-mart, and talk to the salesman. Tell him what you want to use the camera for - indoor or outdoor, scenic or portrait. Occasional use or all the time. The will help you pick out the best camera for your needs. Also, go to Consumer Reports and read their articles about digital cameras, a lot of good information.

More pixels means more detail. MOre is not always better, more detail means more data. MOre data means slower transfers, and less storage, So you have to ask yourself how much detail you need. 3.2 is a good average. 5.2 is nice if you plan to blow your pictures up into 8x10 or posters. Thats my fast answer!
