Anime is the Japanese shortened word for 'animation'
There are some that you read backwards and there are some you read the regular way.
In Japan, anime is a rather popular form of entertainment. It comes in the form of tv shows, movies at the cinema as well as direct to video releases (OVA - Original Video Animation). Unlike in the west, anime has a huge variety of genres - it is not only for children. Nor, on the other hand, is it just sex and violence for adults! Anime is for everybody!

Like everyone said, anime is merely Japanese animation. Japanese call their cartoons "anime", based on how they pronounced it (meh, I can't spell the correct pronunciation). It's never read backwards, simply because it's an animation, or rather, "cartoon" if you want to call it. Because you WATCH it. NOT read it.

Don't mistake it with "manga", which means comics; and yes, we do read manga backwards... but not literally, we read it from right to left, that's all.

Anime is Japanese animation. Instead of reading from left to right, they read from right ot left. That is why it seems to us like the book is backwards.
