I'm glad you looked it up yourself. It is not wise to trust just anyone about something that is so skewed in our country.
It is a great misconception that he discovered america, and was any sort of hero. unfortunately, america honors him with this day.
thankfully, at my university, we do celebrate indigenous people day, because they do deserve the respect and honor, especially considering the torture columbus and his men (though, we cannot make columbus the skapegoat. the majority of explorers at the time--and people still today--committed violent crimes. it's just sad that the US made a holiday in honor of him) killed, tortured, raped, etc. their people.
Ask experts. Do research. That's where you'll find answers. I did it myself. Reading the comments you got from the people above really saddened me. A lot of people don't take the time to find truth. and that is how we remain ignorant. and ignorance is dangerous.

There really won't be all that many records of this. Yes he and his men had sex with local women. They are men, after all, from a time & society where women were considered immoral and non-white women were considered useless for anything but sexual advances. Rape? When the man thinks he deserves everything, then yes rape will occur. Murder? Yes there is documentation of this. look at the Bios written before 1920 they tend to have more details. More than Hitler? Not really. Azt least not directly. Yes more indigenous people died via violence & disease after Columbus arrived on the scene, but Hitler actually had a plan to do it. With Columbus it was an accident. If you want someone closer to Hitler in death count, look at the Spanish explorers who found the civilizations in what is now called Mexico.

I really don't believe that Columbus was responsible for anywhere near the number of rapes and murders as those caused by Adolph Hitler during the World War III. However, I do understand that Columbus was hardly a humanitarian and treated the local indigenous people very badly. In addition, I believe that he and his crew members introduced European diseases to the New World that the natives were not immune and this resulted in at least the deaths of many thousands. Yes, Columbus discovered a new world for European conquests but he was definitely not the great hero many make him out to be.
As far a good sources of info I can think of no better than your local library and an Internet search ... but who knows you might get lucky and Yahoo Answers might produce some useful info!

Read Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States for references.
No, Columbus did not kill more people than Hitler, though he did effectually commit genocide on the Arawak Indians.

i dont know if he killed more than hitler, but it is a well known fact that he like many other other "explorers"of his day raped, pillaged and murdered many indigenous people!
i dont think we should celebrate columbus day,i dont think we should teach our children to idolize men who commited such horrible acts.
as for finding diarys or journals of people who were with columbus or witnessed the atrocities he commited try the library of congress or the smithsonian's website!!!

Are you saying that Columbus killed more than 13 million people. Isn't over 13 million people a lot of people to kill with a musket?
