No, the ice balls are not really safe to eat as they pass through the clouds and into the atmosphere before hitting the ground. There's usually contamination in the air that sticks to the ice balls and even snow. I have heard people eating snow. The worst that can happen is you'd get a stomach ache if you eat enough of them!

I don't believe it will kill you, but before the hail even hits the ground, it collects dust particles and other things, like germs, from the air.

it's basically just frozen rain in a way, so it depends on how clean your rain is. it's not totally healthy because there is pollution, but ding it once or twice won't hurt you.

it is just like drinking rain. but, if you recall the water cycle, the water could have some nasties in it. it could be contaminated with some form of bacteria.
