I know I'm going to get flamed for even addressing this question, but here goes...Nobody who answered this question was either
A. from there, or
B. experienced in the topic asked.
Prostitution in the Red Light district bordellos is legal(as is the use of pot and hashish in the cafe's), and therefore strictly controlled as to health risks(and potency for the latter). You have no more chance of contracting an STD from one of them than you do from a date in a bar at home, because you WILL be using protection first of all; and secondly, they aren't going to take any risks for your convienience. This is their livelihood and you're just another John! If you're looking for girlfriend sex, forget it.
Streetwalkers, on the otherhand could be the death of you(quite literally!), so beware. And if you must use the services of a professional, make sure she's agreeable to all your requests before you get involved...No use having a lovefest with your fist after paying hundreds of Euros for a miscommunication!

The prostitutes are checked frequently and I would imagine they make you use protection so I think the risk of an STD is small. The cost is 50 euros, some of the woman are very beautiful. I have been to Amsterdam twice and have never had any trouble but I stick to the coffee shops and only window shop but never buy in the red light district.

The biggest risk is STD's, the next is getting ripped off? I never heard of any problems with either though.... I stay in the coffee shops...
