I am a student of Spanish and French (well, a teacher of Spanish and French, but I am always learning).

Watching TV and reading magazines helps me to learn new vocabulary and to nail down some of my pronunciation. Sometimes it really helps me with sentence structure and grammar as well.

So, to answer your question, the media can help you to learn a language by providing you with examples of everyday speech. It is a little bit of immersion that can happen right in your own house.

I'm not sure what kind of help you are referring to. If they are just learning the language, then the media provides both printed and spoken word along with images to help in mastering the language. If however, they are native speakers, then the spoken format will help to standardize pronunciation while the written format standardizes spelling.
