Depending on your family's circumstances, who lives at home, their ages, etc. your mother might quailfy for head of household status that would allow her to get some kind help from either the federal government or the state. It would be a good idea to contact a local social welfare office and have a social worker come out and do an evaluation. A good intake worker could determine what your mother might be qualified for. I'm no longer familiar with all the programs, and the states tend to vary, too. I hope you can find something. It's a rough position to be in.

crisis times like these are when you ask other members of your family for help.
There are church pantries. Maybe she can get food stamps for your entire household for a while.
Sometimes the county will pay the rent/mortgage for one month only (or part of it). They can also pay one month's electric bill. You have to go there early, take a number, fill out a form, then wait to be called, they review your case, etc. set up another appointment then you have to go there again with those two bills and then they may or may not approve it. Most times they do approve it.
I don't know what you mean "signed him up for disability".
When a person goes on "disability" it means they have contacted an (Disability/ssd/ssi) attorney who takes the matter to court and fights for your case. The cost comes out of the amount of money your dad's attorney wins for him. Did your mom do this for your dad?

You can call the local Disability Advocates group in your area and they may be able to refer you to places that can offer you help. I know it is a very difficult situation...I went through it with my wife and we lost pretty much everything. There are churches with food banks that can help with food. The disability advocate group is the best way to go . You should be able to find it in the phone book. Some electric companies have programs to help pay some of your bills also. I wish you and your family the best and hope you will find the help you need.

It's probably a lot of red tape, but social security disability is available if your dad's unable to work. This is NOT welfare as I'm sure your dad has paid dearly into it over the years.
Visit your local social services office and find out what all of your other options are.
Good luck and keep your chin up.

Keep trying and look to your church for any help it can offer. They may be able to help with meals, winter clothing and even rides to doctor's appointments and such.
The social safety net is a bewildering maze to us folk who are used to providing for ourselves, and it seems like they only want to help shiftless losers who can't stay off drugs long enough to earn their own living. you must try every option, from food stamps to section 8 housing assistance to whatever else is available in your town.
