what time does the rooster/chicken cock-a-doodle-do? I'm not joking. I'm writing a story about a girl who lives in a rural community and rooster/chicken is what wakes her up.

I have no idea where the myth that roosters crow at sunrise comes from. the truth is those little varmints co.ck-a-doodle-doo at all hours of the day and night. they crow in the morning. they crow in the afternoon. they crow in the evening. If they do stop to get some shut eye at night then they are generally up and at it again no later than 3 am. that's LONG before sunrise in any part of the world where people have roosters running around on their properties. but no joking around roosters will often be crowing their little hearts out at midnight more often than not. if eggs and chickens weren't so delicious all roosters would have been shot by sleepy people ages ago.
I suggest you put into your story that when the girl wakes up she hears the rooster crow, but if that's what actually awakens her then your character will be seriously sleep deprived.

The roosters around here start to really crow along the same time that the sun starts to come up. Chickens just kind of cluck as they forage around for food all the time.

It's generally used at the time of its awakening. There's no point in giving you its scientific reason, since you're writing a story.
