From the ancient Zoroastrian tradition that people were divided into good and evil parts and that this manifested in the physical world as The Light and Darkness. This good half was also connected with God and Godliness, which in nearly all European languages is a variation of the Greek "Deos" (where we get 'theology' etc) and is pronounced 'dayos'. Thus referring to daytime as God time and leaving the darkness of the night to evil and Satan. Hence it is a combination of linguistics and religious belief which gives us the word "Day".

Because during creation God created Day and Night not forgetting the moon to light the night-time and the sun to light the day. So God named it, maybe you should ask him.

It rolls off the tongue better than "brightish, sunny hours between sunrise and sunset." Makes sense, no?
