The specs from ASUS say that the mobo will only support as high as Sempron 3000+, but that could be because Sempron 3400+ wasn't even on the market when the last BIOS revision was done. Is there another difference between Sempron 3400 and 3000, other than speed?

No, it will not work, not even close. This board is designed for processors that still used the FSB system, the 3400+ uses the HyperTransport system. Now if what I just said makes no sense to you, let me just say that they have two totally different architectures which make them completely uncomaptible. (Just wanna make sure, I know at times computer people can use technicl terms that not everyone understands)

athlon xp 2800+ this is the superb that motherboard can do by way of fact it is exceptionally previous and on the time a value saver so it cant cope with lots yet you will do exceptionally good with an athlon xp 2800+

If it is the same socket as the motherboard, probably ok.

3400+ voltage is 1.4 volts
3000+ voltage is 1.6 volts
