i learned something new this summer.. when i came back from vacation..(i left my ac off) it took hours to cool down my house.. reason? my walls were soo hot, they too had to cool down.. the best thing to do, is keep your ac within 5-10 degrees from where you want it.. have your timer set for the temp you want about an hour before you get home.. it is cheaper, and easier on your ac unit to maintain, than to cool your whole house down at once..very important.. change those filters (those cheapy filters are not good!) if you don't change those filters the dust can get up into your unit and cause lots of problems (which i found out, when i moved into a new house and the person b4 didn't change the filters in who knows how long) I got lucky, i had it serviced before it got really expensive..

I love in south Texas on the coast so same conditions...my air conditioning system has a de humidifier that comes on every 5 minutes for 60 seconds day and night. It is also in the mid 90's here.....I love a cold house, so during the day when I am home I leave the air on 74degrees and when I am out of the house or out of town, I leave it on 76 or 77.......never any mold, etc. I am very hot natured and if I put my thermostat down to 70 or 72 I would have to wear a jacket in the summer!!!!!!

I live in South Florida, and we set our thermostat for 79-80 when we are at home and 83 during the day. If you set it much higher than 83 and you may have too much humidity in the house. It works for us. You might get a dehumidifier and use that instead of turning on your a/c during the day. See the last source on the list.

The US Dept of energy says to make sure you change your air filter regularly, and to have your air conditioner's coils cleaned as well. Also try keping window blinds closed in order to save energy. Another idea I have heard (an mentioned in the last source) is to have a attic fan installed in order to circulate out hot air.

The sources below have information about saving energy when using your air conditioner.

When you are not there, keep the temp at about 80 degrees.
You need the AC to act as a dehumidifier. Anything warmer and you will get too much humidity.
You might consider a timer, so the AC stays off at night.
The temps(72) that others are listing are great if you are home, not necessary when you are not.

keep your thermostat 72, if you keep moving up an down your unit is working twice as hard. When you leave your home if you move it up the house gets warm. That included carpet, drapes, furniture. So your unit runs until it cools all that down. an it warms your wallet up
