* Plenty of clothes (it's a good idea to always bring a change of clothes to the parks because there's water rides that you can get soaked on, or it can be very hot, and you can get very sweaty)
* Broken-in, comfortable walking shoes
* A swimsuit (there are two water parks, as well as pools at the resorts)
* A sweatshirt or jacket in case it's chilly or breezy
* A raincoat/poncho (it often rains for short periods of time)
* A hat and/or sunglasses
* A smaller bag that will be easy for him to carry around the parks (that way he can bring a change of clothes, bottled water, etc.)
* Sunscreen/sunblock (it can get awfully hot and sometimes you have to wait a while outside to get on a ride)
* Hand sanitizer and facial wipes (they're very helpful to have on hand when you're at a park touching things thousands of people touch daily, and to clean up after meals when there's long lines to the bathrooms)
* Gum (if they're flying, he may want some, and none is sold at Walt Disney World)
* Bottled water and snacks (food and beverages cost so much at WDW, a bottle of water costs about $3.50! they allow you to bring your own bottled drinks and snacks into the parks. they're also great for when you're at the resort)
* A cell phone if you have one (it helped a lot for me to be able to call home to my mom when I needed or wanted to, and it cost less than it would to use the phone in the room at the resort)
* A camera (so he can capture all those fun, memorable moments and show you what a great time he had)
* And, of course, money (Disney's expensive, and there's a lot of great shops and things to buy. He'll need plenty of money for souvenirs to remember this memorable vacation.
* If he saves up change, or any fo the family does, have him bring some (there's all kinds of pressed penny machines all over the parks and resorts, and it's a lot of fun to collect them. Bring all the quarters and pennies he can. It's a lot easier to already have the change than to get change from a busy cashier or locate a change machine while you're at a park)
You're son's going to have a wonderful time, it's a magical place!

I don't know where you are from or what you consider cool/cold but lately it has been breezy here in Orlando and pretty chilly once the sun sets (down in the 60's). The day time is beautiful weather with not much humidity so shorts or pants with a t-shirt would be fine during the day, and a jacket at night. Extra clothes are always helpful especially since it rains here quite often, along with an extra pair of shoes (comfortable ones at that). Pack a raincoat/poncho before hand, as it's better to be safe then sorry, because they are not cheap at Disney. A swimsuit might be helpful too.
Even though it is cooler now if the sun is an issue with your son then sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat are a must because the sun still beats down on you. A disposable camera (or two)especially with kids this is always a fun way for them to remember their trip, and since you aren't going with you too can share some of his most precious moments. Not too much or else he'll try to buy everything but a few extra bucks is always nice (whatever you see fit, $50 could buy about two decent sized things).
If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask. I hope your son enjoys his trip.

He will need some clothes that consist of long sleeved shirts and short sleeved shirts are fine, it is not cold right now. Maybe a little bit of spending money to get some souvenirs.If its all expenses paid then all he needs to bring is his smile and to have a wonderful time, it really is a great experience for him. =)

DisneyLand is in California.
Disney World is in Florida.
Sorry, but that is one of my biggest pet peeves when people mix those up.
Anyways for the most part its still really warm down there, so shorts and t-shirts. But, I've found that it might can get a little chilly in the evenings so pack a light jacket or hoodie.
Everything else is just pretty standard. Tooth paste, tooth brush, hair brush, etc.

Camera to capture the memories for years to come and an autograph book to get characters autographs and pack an empty travel bag to bring back all the souvenirs on the plane

Orlando is still warm, ok, hot. cool clothes. a hat. a calling card or cell phone to call you when he misses you (he will). a rain poncho or jacket. comfortable walking shoes, if he'll be walking, as the parks are really big for a 9 year old. His favorite stuffed animal or toy. A lot of love and reassurance.
