The newsies lately are quite fond of saying "as well" instead of "also". They use it so often, I believe they feel it's a sign of high intelligence.

I haven't noticed that. I'm not sure if it's grammatically incorrect, but it sure sounds awkward if you use it in the wrong place in a sentence. For example:

I ate soup for dinner, and a grilled cheese sandwich as well. *good

I ate soup for dinner, and also a grilled cheese sandwich. *good

I ate soup for dinner, and as well a grilled cheese sandwich. *bad

Of course you already know this. I was just being a nerd. Anyway, I think it's a case of a little knowledge being a bad thing, just like when people misuse "whom" it makes them look dumber than if they say "who" in the wrong place.

depends on the sentence and not necessarily a sign of intelligence since the newspapers write on the 6th grade level.

It depends on the context of the sentence.
Also you speak English not American, try learning History!

Sentence construction is better when using the active and not passive voice.

Depends on how you use it...

Summer is hot. As well, winter is cold. (X) WRONG

Summer is hot. Also, winter is cold. (*) RIGHT

Chocolate is good, as well, vanilla, too. (*) RIGHT
