Comfortable but manageable always.
I've been OK with 400 sq. ft. and 2400 sq. ft.
No offense meant certainly, but what is the strict need of more space than one actually NEEDS,,, or more to the point,,,USES?
I do like your suggestion of Land however. No matter my house, I'd like enough land to allow me NOT to see yours,,or you to see mine,,,smiles.

On the outside, first floor looks like an over-sized brick ranch. The ends of the house would contain a bedroom which stretches across the whole house and every bedroom would have a bath. I picture one of the baths being up some stairs in the bedroom, which means ceilings would be high.
An open kitchen with swinging doors to the dining area. Also upstairs is a parlor (just looks good - and a place for drop ins or other guests), and an exercise room with at least a 3/4 bath. I also need a room with a floor which is clear so you can see all the jigsaw puzzles underneath it. Sounds like a game room (with pinball!) Also want a library/study. And yes, a few more bathrooms, but they'd be 1/2 or a 3/4 - can't have guests waiting!
In the middle is an atrium (lots of greenery) with stairs to the walk out basement. In the basement is a theatre (and a popcorn machine!) and a living area with plush carpeting and a terrific audio/video set up. Yes, there's the dreaded laundry room and a place for the cats. Maybe a dumb waiter to move stuff up and down (clothes?) Another bedroom across the end of the house. Playroom for kids. Of course another bathroom or two (plus one in the bedroom).
Lots of sliding glass doors - the backyard includes some grass, trees, a pool and the ocean. There's also a two car attached garage (I won't have to scrape a windshield!) and a circular driveway.
It isn't huge, but it is spacious. Hey, it could happen. :)
Oops. After reading a few others I did realize I forgot something - fireplaces. I wouldn't expect to live somewhere REALLY cold, but I've always had a liking for them.
P.P.S. Thanks for the question, because this is fun. It's interesting to read the responses - protection and just in case scenarios. I'm surprised I didn't put that as I've lost power quite a bit this past year (our transformer always seems to blow) and I had a flood almost 2 weeks ago - losing much in the basement.

One great room made of river stone and logs with a tin roof. It would have a huge porch with a retractable awning. There would be a wooden walkway going to a beach on a lake or ocean. In back of the house would be a field then a woods preferably with more oaks than any other tree.
There would be double dutch doors on opposite ends so they could both be opened at once and as many window as possible with automatic metal shutters inside and out for safety and protection. There would be either a freestanding fireplace in the center of the room made of river stone or a fireplace in one corner.
When you walk in the front doors, the kitchen would be immediately to your right. The sink and stove would face the front. There would be be a hand pump for emergencies. I would have a huge wooden table with very comfortable chairs on casters.
To the left would be the living area again with very comfortable yet sturdy, durable furniture, preferably by La-Z- Boy or Flexsteel.
The bedroom and bath would be in the back. I would want a very spacious bathroom with a washer and drier. The back door would either have a enclosed walkway to the garage or an attached garage.
I would want it to be made with as many natural materials as possible. I would also like an underground stocked hidey-hole in case of emergencies with a hidden entrance/exit away from the house. All and all, the house should be warm and welcoming.

A cross between a mansion style and castle. I was always fascinated with Versailles in France,(where Marie Antoinette lived), I share the name and would love to do the grandeur style. Not so much that it is gaudy looking. And have 2 stories, french door opening to a balcony in my master bedroom, all the new technology that u find in 5-star hotels, rich linens, a big long dining room table that sat something like 12 or more. Lovely fireplaces in several rooms, enough rooms and big for family and friends to have like a suite. A big kitchen b/c I love to cook, pool, jacuzzi, outdoor kitchen and pool house, big garage for cars. BUT to dream a dream.....

a 12 bedroom, 12 bathroom log and stone house with solar panels, generator, etc, on 150,000+ acres in the northwest near the Grand Tetons. I'd probably name it the Ponderosa and have 4 sons, Adam, Eric (Hoss), Little Joe and the bastard called Candy. I'd want a chinese housekeeper, a lot of cattle, horses and lots of money. A silver mine on the property and a large many hundred acre lake would be nice. Id want lots of workers so that the boys and I could make mischief and solve crimes at least once a week.

i need all the us property to be mine and build a castle in the middle built out of granite. and the entire country to be in my control so everyone gets what they deserve(ie rapeist/child molestors loose anatomy, homeless get homes and jobs and so on) lol ok now that the joke is over.
honestly i would like about 300 acres 280 of which is wooded, the rest open. i would build a nice log cabin, have a barn and raise my own livestock and veggies. i would also have an inground pool, hot tub sauna and dungeon, (a room in the basement built with granite for my computer room, fits the online game i play) and a pond
