Do you have to be raised there? I am from Florida and visit relatives in Nebraska occasionally.

Well, as a Midwesterner, born and raised, sometimes it's difficult. It may seem like all there is to do is farm, but that's not really true. Even in rural locations, there is usually a good sized city within driving distance. What's great about this time of year is that some of those blasted cornfields get turned into mazes and we get to pretend we're rats and go through them. As Halloween approaches some of the fields are "haunted" and you never know when something will reach out and grab you. It's like an outdoor haunted house. The Midwest is full of charm, but definitely not for everyone. It seems as though you don't like being here for long, but that's okay, I wouldn't want to live in Florida either. Pretty state, but not for me.

Sitting on our front porch swing at dusk, listening to the barn owl hoot or watching the new batch of kittens play in the yard seems like the most sane & safe place in the world.

We rarely have traffic, and when we do theres always a friendly wave.

We have nearly 5 acres of just yard for the kids and dog to play. Soybeans or corn on all 4 sides of us...they alternate yearly.

No traffic lights, or neon signs.

Theres always something to do. Plant our garden, watch a new animal (deer, bunnies, frogs...), look at the stars, play in the snow, swim in the pond, jump on the trampoline, talk/shop on-line, the list could go on and on....

Its very peaceful. Silence can be a beautiful sound.

Actually, we are all lulled to a peaceful bliss by the gently swayng of the grains, the hum of the harvesting and the knowledge that our famers provide food for so many. We keep our sanity by realising what a blessing we have been given!
PS- did you know the prairie is a most diverse ecosystem per area- plent to look at!

Its so much more peaceful than 8.2 million people living on an island with only 5 roads out. Driving with your middle finger and the horn button. Walking down the street and hearing a dozen foreign languages spoken around you. So much 24 hour traffic that you can't repair roads to a smooth drivable surface and if you see someone smiling its because the're about to screw you and they like it.
Endless waves of grain as the song says!

Florida was one of the most miserable places I've ever been. What a humid, hot, bug infested, hurricane beaten toilet in the American landscape!
