I mean how it works, don't say something like Dell because Dell has good service.

If building your own is an option, you will get better hardware at a better price. If not, check with local computer shops and see what they have to offer in the way of custom built computers. If you want a name brand, Gateway or Emachines. Gateway generally uses better hardware, and most are easy to work on if you decide to do some upgrading in the future. Dell offers a decent computer, but they are a nightmare to work on, and most things won't interchange with most Dells. If you have a power supply go out on a Dell, you usually have to go to Dell and pay much more for their power supply, as it is a special one that will only work with Dell. If you are buying off the shelf at Wal-mart or Bestbuy, stay away from HP. IBM is good, but you will pay more for it. Never, under any circumstances, buy a Compaq. Emachines puts out a pretty good computer for the money, unless you intend to do some intense gaming, or run alot of office apps. Good luck.

Dell for Windows; real Apple Computers for Mac OS. Both companies offer good customer service.

Hewlett-Packard for a major brand. I got a referbished one for 1/2 price, and it never broke except that one time I plugged it into a bad outlet...

For a minor brand, try Asus. They make good motherboards, so they gotta be good.

For the best ever, build your own!!! You can get parts at humongous electronics stores like Fry's electronics, or places like newegg.com if you don't have a Fry's nearby. If you want specific parts, this is the way to nail it right down to the mylar capacitors!

Dell, simply because it's one of the cheapest and they allow you great freedom in customising the computer/laptop you're interested in buying.

Apple. The Cadillac of computers. A little expensive, but so worth it. 95% less chance of catching a virus than a Windows based machine, long lasting hardware, fabulous software (iLife '06 built in), Airport, widgets, sleek, simple design...What more could you want? I have two laptops (a MacBook and an iBook) and believe them to be the best investments I've made through my college years.

Dell is ok for those who dont know much about hardware and want a prebuilt system.
I myself build my own because it's usually cheaper and i can get exactly what i want in it and nothing i dont need.
