Of course this is possible, especially if one person is extremely hurt or one party hopes to reconcile. If one person wants to reconcile, it is too hard on the other person to spend time with that person. Face it, you don't break up because you're happy.
It's more likely to be possible if it is a mature, healthy relationship where both parties know exactly what happened to them and why they are breaking up, and particularly if the breakup is mutual.
It also depends on what the relationship was based on...was it friendship that became more? Then you can hopefully fall back on your friendship if the romantic love didn't work; that is, of course, if one of you isn't too bitter or hurt or angry.
If you didn't take the time to foster a friendship within the relationship, you will have little on which to base a friendship after you break up.
Sometimes you don't want to see the person for a while. This is normal and healthy and is a highly recommended method of "cooling off". You may slowly work your way back to each other with platonic friendship in mind if you're both okay after a while.
It doesn't work all the time because some people are not honest about their intentions when they say they want to be friends. What they really mean is they want to continue to be in your life and your space beause they can't let go of you. In that case the stronger person has to cut it off cold turkey, at least until the other party gets over them.
It's not shameful to end a 10 year relationship and not be friends, in fact, it is more common than remaining friends. It is sad, but not shameful. It's sad to think you can give 10 years of your life to someone and not have built a strong enough foundation to continue with a friendship, but it happens every day.
Good luck!

Yes, They begin to hold grudges and mistakes agianst those people and after so long and you break up with the other they dont want to be friends cause they already know what they are all about. Grudges are bad things to hold can ruin losts of things for people. Either that or they know that they are still in love somewhere and they figure that if their not friends and they saty apart that there is no way of restarting any of those feelings mainly when they want nothing more than to move on with there lives
