Not extremely small but a decent mid sized town,,,Missoula.
Close enough to Idaho to get to the Pacific coast in a day trip, and/or Billings, etc. to the East.
The town is surrounded by no less than 3 rivers, and within 20 minutes you can be out of the town and in the mountains etc.
Culturally evolving it's a decent place to get involved. Politically it's moderate. Industrially, it's pretty laid back.
The people I connected with were all respectful, didn't talk up or down to anyone,,,weren't all cowboys or rednecks, or High brows.
Employment is average, and many agricultural venues use Migrants. Season employment is a major factor to consider if you're a usual outdoor contractor type.
Weather: Severe Winters should never be a surprise, and can last 5 months in the ranges from good/fair/bad/fair/good.
The Summer I was there the entire month of July had little rainfall and the temps were in triple figures daily, without being oppressive.
I suggest this,,, Craigslist.com for compaitive searches. You'll understand when you get to the site. Also Chambers of Commerce,,, using a WWW general search in your browser,,,unless you have aol, which allows a change home city feature.
Etc. Etc. Etc.

Montana is a wonderful state to live in. Just about anywhere in the state is good and crime is very low. Consider more pressing issues like where you're going to work and possibly where you want your kids to go to school or college. Also think about what activites you're interested in. Scenery is everywhere, but the mountains for hiking and skiing are to the west and flatlands and praire are to the east, so if you like wheat and farmland, east is the place.
Oh and the winters are nothing like California, they can be harsh with snow and cold temperatures.
