When I was born, I spent a few days in an incubator. I have heard that this could lead to a type of abandonment syndrome, even for adults. I am now middle-aged. I am also totally blind. Can anyone shed any light on this? I am very emotional, and tend to cry easily and feel rather clingy at times.

I would think the super challenge of getting by on this planet while being blind would make anyone emotional, clingy and cry. It seems a most normal response, I know people who are not blind and still are overly emotional, clinging & crying.
I am sure the rest of us could learn great lessons from you. you have my prayers.

Do some research on Reactive Attachment Disorder. I don't know that only a few days in an incubator could cause this, but i suppose it is possible. I am really excited about new research and awareness of this problem. It defintely is an issue for many adults and as a mental health clinician I see it frequently professionally and personally.

I'm curious though... how does a blind person use the internet? I'm not trying to be mean, I just am wondering. I should do some research on that. :)

I don't think it has any effect. Premature children are watched closer than "normal" children....but they usually even out well before high school. My nephew was in an incubator for weeks, he certainly doesn't have abandonment issues.

I will tell you what did come to mind to though, it probably has more to do with a heightened sense due to the blindness. When one sense is lost we make up for it with heightened senses in other areas.......with some, like a friend of my ex's its his hearing, he can feel the vibes before someone speaks, he also has an incredible musical talent he wouldn't have otherwise. Both have to do with sensitivity to vibration. I think you likely are just very empathetic, you just feel peoples emotions more than others do...which can be a good thing. Bit you sense things about people don't you?

Some of us don't mind clingy.......I call it worship....I like to be adored!
