Well, when I used to swim in a pool, with chlorine, I do not think my eyes were injured. I used to also open my eyes in the Pac Ocean in Huntington Beach or Newport Beach when I was in high school.
It may sting a bit, but if you do not have a face mask and you want to see where you are or are looking for something, I guess you would have to open your eyes.

depends on what's in the water. chlorine, such as what's found in swimming pools, has the potential to damage our eyes. but typically it's in a low enough concentration so that it won't be harmful, other than causing dry eyes. the human body is remarkable in it's abillity to heal itself in most situations.
