Yes, I would say my hearing is extremely important, I just do not know how I would be able to cope with life if I lost my hearing, I love the sound of my husbands voice and the things he says to me, music, bird song, children's laughter, my dog making her crazy little noises, my family and friends voices either face to face or on the telephone, I should imagine you can become very panicky and frightened with lots of things like crossing a road, walking into a shop or store, a restaurant or pub, I just would so dislike been deaf and would feel very out of society, I really do not know how deaf people cope, they are amazing and we could learn a lot from them and be much more helpful and all learn sign language.

I was born profoundly deaf and remain totally deaf in my left ear.
Funnily enough, I do not find this a problem.
What I do find a problem are the people who have lost some of their hearing and, despite still having more hearing than me, act as if they had no hearing at all.
Crossing roads, I look left - right - left again, and then cross.
I hate crossing the road when accompanied by others, that is the only time I might run into danger.
PS
I quite like being a little deaf, it means I can sleep on my 'good' ear.

The sense of hearing, i.e. the sense with which sound is perceived, is indeed of outmost importance in our lives. The possibility we have to be aware of sounds is vital for us to be able to carry out our activities. Occupational noise exposure or exposure to modern urban noise can affect our sense of hearing. It is a gradual process progressing over a period of years, without any external signs at the outset. It causes cumulative and finally irreversible damage in the middle and inner ear. It is often characterised by difficulty in understanding speech and tinnitus, i.e. ringing in th ears. After exposing the ear to sound above 110 dB or so for a few minutes, audiometry will show a temporary hearing loss, and after sufficient time exposure this becomes permanent.
