It depends on where you get it from. Most pet store guinea pigs are not very tame, and will scramble away when you try to pick them up (though they might be fine once you have them out) and a child could easily get scratched in the process. Guinea pigs are prey animals, like rabbits, and some large person picking them up can be very frightening. They also are very dirty and tend to urinate a lot all around their cage.

Some guinea pigs from breeders are much tamer because they are usually handled from birth.

A very good pet for children is a rat (if your children are at least 6 or so). They are very tame, very sweet and clean, and very personable, they absolutely LOVE to be taken out and held. For more information on rats, visit my website (below)

Guinea Pigs are very loveable animals.....They like to be cuddled, played with and stuff like that. I have had Guinea Pigs for a long time and have never had a problem with them with children. They do shed, however, so if your children have allergies, thats something to consider.....

Guinea pigs make excellent pets, for ages four and up, with supervision of course, unlike hamster and gerbils they are less likely to bite and do not smell if you are changing their cage on a regular basic, Do not you cedar shaving, as they are dangerous to the piggies. I run a rescue and we have placed 1,950 piggies in loving forever homes. Keep in mind when getting a piggy (please adopt) for your child keep in mind that you will be the primary care giver. We get a lot of owner turn ins. The main reason is child lost interest in caring for it. They are easy to care for you need an plastic bottom cage wire on top, bedding, woody pet, care fresh, yesterdays news, or aspen are all fine, a commercial grain for guinea pigs, as the need victim C fresh fruits and veggies, water and hay, alfalfa under six months timothy over 6 month.Oh yes and lots of love,

If you go with a rescue you will leave know how to take care of them, they will also be guaranteed to be healthy and not pregnant which is not always the case with larger pet store, I will not name names as that would be rude and mean all at the same time.

They are not bad with children if both are roasted in the same oven. I prefer my Guinea Pigs ( I'm from Peru) with sweet potato and carrots.

Piggies are very docile with humans, but they don't like to be handled a lot. They like to set on a towel on your lap and hang out. Piggies are very fragile and kids can easily hurt them or kill them.

It takes a lot of special daily care to keep piggies healthy. Mine are all over 6 years old.

no for two reasons
1. they smell like your but after living in their for two or so weeks
2. your little "precious" child send to eat them and/or cook them in the microwave so that you may hear a pleasant little screaming coming for your lil itty bitty piggy
